Apparently Morgan Stanley thinks so...at least in 20 years. Thoughts?

They're full of shit. Look how old many of today's automotive companies are - many are at or over the century mark. But somehow in 20 more years, only 6 will exist. Suuuuure.

I think it is hilarious that Saab is in their graphic

The concept is feasible, I suppose, but I'm not sure why they think GM is ready to keel over and die...They're huge and their sales numbers are strong and increasing.

I was gonna post this as well but ya beat me to it. Two things.
1. There will be more than 6 automakers in 20 years. Will some parent companies cut out their sub brands? Yes. But companies like Tesla will pop up, some becoming successful and others failing. This article doesn't really specify if they mean 6 makers in the US or the world and then goes on to talk about Suzuki pulling out of America. That doesn't mean that Suzuki no longer exists though. They still make motorcycles and cars in other parts of the world. Their Kei cars are successful in Japan. Just because a car maker doesn't sell cars in America doesn't mean it's dead or dying. Volvo won't be going anywhere soon now that they have money from Geely and can built nicer cars. Plus their whole lineup is being revamped essentially. Hopefully we'll see a return of Saab. Audi/BMW/Mercedes have been around for a long time and they're making such desirable cars that in twenty years time, we'll still have those 3. Unless in the next ten years people just stop buying cars altogether, we're always going to have several car companies to choose from.

2. Car & Driver authors/editors really need to stop acting like they're the ultimate authority on everything. Sure they get to preview and review a lot of brand new cars before other sources but some of the articles that they publish just come across as "HEY THIS AUTHOR IS WRONG BECAUSE HE/SHE ISN'T PART OF C&D, MAYBE HE/SHE SHOULD READ C&D TO BECOME MORE EDUCATED." The tone I get from a lot of their articles really turns me off from wanting to subscribe to them.

I can't prove it, but it strikes me as complete nonsense. If anything, the market's going the other way: the world's getting wealthier, markets are getting larger, and previously unviable niches are becoming viable. We're likely to see more 'customer' parts, I suspect - not just engines and gearboxes and lights and door handles, but whole platforms and so-on.

I hope that image isn't who they predict will last.

It might be a case of a few parent companies owning many smaller ones. I mean hell its pretty much like that now. Ford, GM, Toyota, Fiat and a few others.

The fact that they say there will only be six automakers and then have a graphic showing five tells me everything I need to know.

I have a hard time believing the Germans will pack it in in the next 20 years.
